Court orders seizure of tax records of Hasina's ex-pion's wife
Jahangir, who had amassed a staggering fortune worth Tk400 crore, fled to the United States just before the fall of the Hasina-led government
A Dhaka court has ordered the seizure of income tax records belonging to Kamrun Nahar, the wife of Jahangir Alam, former pion to deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina, amid an ongoing corruption investigation.
The order was issued today (18 November) by Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Sabbir Faiz, following a petition filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
ACC Assistant Director Piyas Pal had sought the court's permission to confiscate Nahar's tax documents, Md Riaz Hossain, a bench assistant of the court, told The Business Standard.
According to the ACC application, Nahar is a registered taxpayer whose records are held at Tax Zone–5, Circle–103 in Dhaka. For the sake of a fair and thorough investigation, the ACC argued that it is essential to seize and examine the original tax files – including permanent and miscellaneous sections – covering the assessment years 2013-14 to 2023-24.
Jahangir, who had amassed a staggering fortune worth Tk400 crore, fled to the United States just before the fall of the Hasina-led government.
