The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has filed a case against former member of parliament (MP) Abu Reza Nadvi and 15 others over allegations of embezzling more than Tk12.79 crore from the International Islamic University Chittagong (IIUC).
ACC Deputy Director Kamal Chakraborty filed the case today (30 October) at the commission's Chattogram Integrated District Office-1. Deputy Director of Chattogram Integrated District Office-1 Shobel Ahmed confirmed the filing of the case.
Those named in the case include former MP and ex-chairman of the IIUC Board of Trustees Abu Reza Nadvi, former vice-chancellor Prof Anwarul Azim Arif, IIUC Tower coordinator and trustee Prof Kazi Din Mohammad, trustees Prof Saleh Zahur, Engineer Rashid Ahmed Chowdhury, Rizia Reza Chowdhury, Khaled Mahmud, Prof Fasiul Alam, Prof Abdur Rahim, Dr Shamsuzzaman, and Badiul Alam; former registrars Prof Humayun Kabir and Shafiur Rahman; Tower Management Committee member Prof Dr Mahi Uddin, Afzal Ahmed, and Mozzaffar Hossain.
According to the case statement, the accused—former members of the IIUC Board of Trustees and several senior officials—collectively misappropriated Tk12,79,41,556 through abuse of authority and mutual collusion. Under the Private University Act, trustees are prohibited from receiving any financial benefits from the institution, the ACC noted.
Among the accused, Khaled Mahmud is the younger brother of former minister Hasan Mahmud, who fled the country following the fall of the Awami League government. Rizia Reza Chowdhury is the wife of Abu Reza Nadvi.
The ACC said the accused violated university regulations and used their positions on the IIUC Board of Trustees to siphon off institutional funds for personal gain. An investigation is underway to trace the misappropriated money and identify any additional beneficiaries, officials said.
