Coordinated development efforts needed in char areas

Kurigram's Deputy Commissioner (DC) Nusrat Sultana has emphasised that the district's 269 char areas, home to a large population, are the most vulnerable during disasters.
These areas are already lagging in development.
"I have personally walked through the char areas and witnessed the dire state of education, healthcare, and transport infrastructure. To ensure effective development, all government and non-government organisations must work together in a coordinated manner," she said.
She made these remarks as the chief guest at a discussion held on Monday, 10 March, at 11:00 a.m. in the conference hall of the DC office to mark National Disaster Preparedness Day 2025.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC—General) Uttam Kumar Roy presided over the meeting, which the Kurigram district administration organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief.
Kurigram District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Abdul Matin, District Livestock Officer Dr Md Habibur Rahman, and Kurigram Press Club General Secretary Aminur Rahman, among others, spoke at the event. Representatives from various NGOs and volunteer groups also participated.
Following the meeting, fire service officials and volunteers conducted a disaster preparedness drill on the DC office premises.
