CNG driver gets 1-month jail for dragging traffic assistant nearly 200 metres in Karwan Bazar
The incident, which went viral on social media, occurred when the traffic assistant tried to stop the CNG-run auto-rickshaw at a traffic signal.
A CNG-run autorickshaw driver, who dragged a traffic assistant for nearly 200 metres on a road in the capital's Karwan Bazar, has been sentenced to one month imprisonment.
A Special Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) passed the sentence under the Road Transport Act after the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit detained the driver today (15 December), said CTTC Deputy Commissioner Jahed Parvez Chowdhury.
The incident, which went viral on social media, occurred when the traffic assistant tried to stop the CNG-run auto-rickshaw at a traffic signal. The driver ignored the signal and drove recklessly, dragging the assistant along the road before he fell.
Passenger Farhan Rahman, who was in the vehicle at the time, shared the video on Facebook, describing how the assistant attempted to stop the vehicle and was dragged almost 200 metres before falling.
Farhan wrote that he and his wife repeatedly asked the driver to stop, but he refused. "If he had stopped at the signal, there would have been no problem. He did this to avoid 'a case'," he said, adding that there was no urgency for the passengers.
The driver later dropped the passengers in a lane near Banglamotor and fled the area when pedestrians tried to catch him, the post said.
Farhan said he later provided the video and photo of the driver and the vehicle with its registration number to a police sergeant at Banglamotor.
According to JC Forhad, a traffic sergeant usually stationed around Banglamotor and Bashundhara City, said the traffic assistant received primary treatment for his injuries at a hospital.
