Clash erupts between two student groups at Dhaka Alia Madrasah during milad mahfil
Several injured, army deployed
A clash broke out between two groups of students at Alia Madrasah in Dhaka's Bakshibazar last night (22 November) during a milad mahfil event.
The incident occurred around 10pm. Army personnel and police were deployed to the scene to bring the situation under control.
Confirming the matter, Chawkbazar Police Station Inspector (investigation) Md Abul Khayer said, "A chase and counter-chase erupted between two student groups over an issue during a milad mahfil event. Police arrived promptly, and the situation is now calm."
Alia Madrasah Principal Prof Mohammad Obaidul Haque said, "A dispute inside the campus led to the clash. Many were injured. The OC and I tried to calm everyone down, but no one listened. Army personnel have been deployed to control the situation."
Following the clash, students were seen staging protests inside the madrasah campus around 10:30pm. Army members later entered the campus to calm the situation.
According to residents, the altercation began with a verbal dispute during the milad mahfil, which eventually escalated into a violent clash. Police intervened and rescued several injured students, taking them to the hospital.
In addition, a group of students assaulted a journalist, allegedly snatching his mobile phone and live-streaming equipment.
Eyewitnesses said that around 10:45pm, several students remained trapped inside the madrasah halls. Police were working to rescue them.
