Newly-appointed Chinese Ambassador in Dhaka Yao Wen has assured Bangladesh of further increased investment and cooperation.

"After Vision 2021, the country is moving towards Vision 2041 to build a 'Smart Bangladesh' and 'Sonar Bangla'. China is keen to support the development journey with increased investment," the ambassador told reporters after a courtesy call on Foreign Minister MA Mannan at the latter's office in the capital on Tuesday.

"China is interested to invest in ICT, food processing, and renewable energy sectors in Bangladesh."

Yao Wen also added that his country will actively participate with fresh investments in the upcoming Bangladesh Business Summit in Dhaka.

"China has a contribution to the development of Bangladesh. Several projects, including the Karnaphuli Tunnel in Chattogram, are about to be completed. Now Bangladesh needs more investment. China wants to take the investment relation and cooperation to a new height."

The ambassador further said China is actively involved in free trade agreement negotiations with Bangladesh and hopes to further advance the talks this year. On the Rohingya issue, he expressed compassion for Bangladesh and reiterated China's efforts to resolve the matter.

"We are working with Bangladesh, Myanmar, and the international community. Hopefully, the complicated issue will be solved soon," he added.

Planning Minister Mannan, at the same event, told reporters that the Chinese envoy will work to further improve relations between Bangladesh and China through increased trade, investment and non-economic activities.

He emphasised the importance of technology and economic development in further strengthening the relationship between the two countries.

"Both countries are on the way to development. China has the technology and we can learn a lot from the country. Bangladesh is also moving forward. So, we can enhance bilateral relations through cooperation in technology and economic development," the minister added.
