An activist of Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal, identified as Md Apurbo, was stabbed to death in Narayanganj following an altercation last night (10 March).

The accused was caught and beaten by locals before being handed over to the police by local BNP leader and activists.

The incident took place at around 10:15pm yesterday in the Balur Math area at Chashara, according to locals and police.

Apurbo was the son of Khokon Mia from the Masdair area of Narayanganj. The 25-year-old worked at a local readymade garment factory named Fakir Garments.

Meanwhile, the detained suspect, Samrat, is the son of Md Hossain from the Golachipa area. He works at a bakery.

According to witnesses, a group of youths were seen arguing with someone in the Balur Math area when Apurbo intervened, trying to defuse the situation. However, the argument escalated, and Samrat suddenly pulled out a switchblade and stabbed Apurbo in the chest. Immediately, bystanders caught Samrat and beat him up.

Azizul Islam Rajib, a former joint convener of the BNP student wing's metropolitan unit, said, "Tonight, we had just finished a torchlight procession protesting against rape and were heading toward Chashara via Balur Math. Apurbo was with us as a fellow member of Chhatra Dal. After walking a bit ahead, we heard that Apurbo had been attacked and stabbed by a mugger.

"We rushed back immediately. We saved the accused from the enraged crowd before handing him over to the police."

A doctor at the emergency department of Khanpur 300-Bed General Hospital in Narayanganj said Apurbo had a stab wound on his chest. He succumbed to the injuries on the way to the hospital.

Sadar Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Nasir Uddin said, "The exact reason behind the murder is still unclear. The accused was beaten by locals before being handed over to the police. He has been given initial medical treatment and is now in police custody."
