Only four days after the new road transport act came into effect, a gruesome accident caused by reckless motorcycling on the Mayor Mohammad Hanif Flyover claimed the life of a 20-year-old college student, Manisha Barman Athai, on Monday.

A CCTV footage from the flyover shows two speeding bikes were driving dangerously close to each other, in futile attempts to overtake and drive on a single lane.

The accident happened as soon as the speeding bike beside the pillion rider's bike lost control and skidded into the other vehicle on the ramp of the flyover.

Athai, thrown off the bike from impact of the skid, slid onto the other side of the separating dividers on the flyover. Not even a moment had passed when Athai went under an oncoming bus plying on its own course on the right side of the elevated roadway.

Unable to foresee the incident, the bus ran straight over Athai's legs - injuring her critically and ultimately claiming her life.

Stepping on the brake, in this case, would be a forlorn attempt to prevent the accident as Athai already skidded towards a running bus, carrying at least 40 passengers, on the busy flyover.

Police and local people rushed both Manisha and rider of the motorcycle, Abdullah Al Galib to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors pronounced Athai dead on arrival.

Galib sustained critical injuries in the accident and is currently under medical care at the hospital.

The bus in question is a vehicle of Thikana Paribahan and has since been seized. The driver, however, is absconding.
