Casino kingpin Samrat under medical observation

Casino kingpin Ismail Hossain Chowdhury Samrat is being kept under 24-hour medical observation, said Director Dr Afzalur Rahman of National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases.

"Samrat's condition is stable and he is doing well. The hospital will provide more details regarding his health on Wednesday morning," he told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday.

The doctor added that all patients suffering from heart related medical conditions undergo a 24-hour observation period following their admission to the hospital as part of the regular procedure.

"We performed some tests on Samrat but found no serious medical issues. He is getting the best healthcare we can offer," Dr Afzalur Rahman added.

A 7-member medical board led by Director Dr Afzalur Rahman has been formed to oversee the treatment of Samrat. He is presently being kept at the Coronary Care Unit under supervision of Dr Mohsin Ahmed.

Earlier in the day, Deputy Jailer of Dhaka Central Jail Mohammad Jahangir Islam said, "We brought Samrat to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital at 7am as he was suffering from severe chest pain.

"After examining Samrat, doctors advised that he be transferred to National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases in Dhaka." 

On October 5, Samrat was sent to the Keraniganj Central Jail after being sentenced to six months of imprisonment for illegal possession of kangaroo hides. 

He was arrested earlier the same day from Cumilla's Chauddagram for alleged involvement in running casino business at a sports clubs in the capital. He reportedly made a move to flee the country through Cumilla border. 

He was expelled from as Jubo League (Dhaka South) president on the same day for violating the discipline of the Awami league front organisation.
