An unnatural death case has been filed following the death of a pedestrian, who was struck by a falling bearing pad from a metro rail pillar in the capital's Farmgate area yesterday (26 October).
The victim's wife, Irene Akter Pia, lodged the case with Tejgaon Police Station last night, confirmed Mobarak Hossain, officer-in-charge of the station.
The incident occurred around 12:15pm yesterday when a load-bearing pad, designed to reduce vibration during metro rail operations, came loose and fell from the structure near Farmgate metro station.
The deceased, Abul Kalam, 35, was a resident of Shariatpur and worked at a travel agency in Uttara.
Witnesses said the heavy pad, weighing up to several dozen kilogrammes, fell suddenly while Kalam was walking on the footpath carrying a bag. It struck him on the head before crashing into a nearby tea shop, injuring two others. Kalam died on the spot.
Following the incident, Road Transport and Bridges Adviser Muhammad Fouzul Kabir Khan announced Tk5 lakh in immediate financial assistance for Kalam's family. He also pledged to bear all funeral costs and provide employment to a family member at the metro rail company.
However, the compensation announcement has sparked widespread criticism on social media, with many questioning the accountability of the metro authorities.
A five-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident.
