Brazil's Amazon sees sharp decline in size of area burned in 2025
The area affected by fires in Brazil's Amazon has decreased dramatically in 2025 after the devastating fires of 2024. According to data from MapBiomass, 3.1 million hectares of land were burned, which is about 80 percent less than the 15.8 million hectares in 2024. Experts say that while this improvement is due to the influence of La Niña, the risk of fires could increase again if El Niño returns in the future. So there is no time to relax now, they warn.
