A group of people set fire to four buses after a bus fatally ran over a security guard of a factory in Gazipur today (30 November).

The deceased was identified as Monnaf Ali, 50, hailing from Jhenaidah.

The incident took place on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in the Targach area of Gazipur city around 8:30pm, Gazipur Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) Md Ibrahim Khan told The Business Standard.

Traffic was blocked on both sides of the highway after the incident, he added.

"A security guard of Ananta Casual Garments was crossing the highway when a Dhaka-bound passenger bus of Ajmeri Paribahan fatally ran him over. Later, agitated workers set buses on fire," said Ibrahim Khan.

"The fire service could not reach the spot on time due to obstruction by locals. Police are working to control the situation," he further said.

Mohammad Mamun, assistant director of Gazipur Fire Service, said two units from Tongi Fire Service were sent to the scene upon receiving the news of fire.

"However, when they tried to open the water hoses, the public attacked them, preventing them from doing their work," he added.
