Buffalo-laden trucks seized with 46 buffaloes within an hour of 999 call, 1 arrested
A prompt call to the national emergency service 999 led to the rescue of 46 buffaloes and two trucks within an hour after they were reportedly hijacked in Gazipur yesterday (17 November) evening.
According to 999 officials, around 4:45 pm on 17 November 2025, a passerby from Harinal Bazar in Gazipur Sadar called the emergency number, informing that armed hijackers had assaulted the drivers of two buffalo-laden trucks and forcefully taken control of the vehicles.
Sub-Inspector (SI) Mizanur Rahman, who led the police patrol unit, confirmed the recovery operation to 999.
The call was received by Constable Md Akbor Hossain, who immediately alerted Gazipur Sadar Police Station for urgent action. The operation was supervised and coordinated by 999 dispatcher SI Md Abdul Bari.
A police patrol team rushed to the spot and intercepted the two trucks in front of Manobkollyan Jubosongho in Gazipur Sadar. Police managed to seize both trucks along with all 46 buffaloes and arrested one of the hijackers, while the others fled.
The arrested suspect was identified as Shamim Ahmed, 32, a resident of Gazipur Sadar, known locally by the aliases Murgi Shamim' and Golden Shamim'.
Police said the two trucks were transporting buffaloes from Sylhet to Rajshahi, and were hijacked midway upon reaching Gazipur.
Truck driver Lokman Hossain filed a case with Gazipur Sadar Police Station. Efforts to arrest the remaining members of the hijacking gang are underway.
