BNP's alternative candidates to Khaleda Zia file nomination papers in Bogura-7, Dinajpur-3
Although multiple BNP candidates have submitted nominations in these seats, the list of valid candidates has not yet been finalised.
BNP has fielded alternative candidates in the Bogura-7, Dinajpur-3 and Feni-1 constituencies, where party Chairperson and former prime minister Khaleda Zia has been nominated for the upcoming 13th national parliamentary election.
BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia passed away at around 6am today (30 December), before the completion of the scrutiny of nomination papers.
Although multiple BNP candidates have submitted nominations in these seats, the list of valid candidates has not yet been finalised.
In Bogura-7 (Shahjahanpur–Gabtali), Gabtali Upazila BNP President Morshed Milton submitted his nomination papers as the party's alternative candidate.
On Friday (26 December), he filed the nomination alongside BNP Chairperson's Adviser and former lawmaker Helaluzzaman Talukder before the upazila nirbahi officer and assistant returning officer.
Speaking after submitting the nomination, Morshed Milton said the decision to keep an alternative candidate in the BNP chairperson's constituency was taken by the party high command.
Meanwhile, in Dinajpur-3 (Sadar) constituency, where Khaleda Zia has also been nominated as the BNP candidate, Syed Jahangir Alam submitted his nomination papers as an alternative contender.
Syed Jahangir Alam, BNP Rangpur divisional committee's joint organising secretary and a former three-time mayor of Dinajpur municipality, submitted the nomination papers to Dinajpur Deputy Commissioner and Returning Officer Rafiqul Islam on Friday afternoon.
After filing the nomination, he said Khaleda Zia was nominated as the party's main candidate for Dinajpur-3, but due to her physical condition, the party decided to keep an alternative candidate in line with organisational decisions.
In the Feni-1 constituency, Dhaka Metropolitan South BNP Convener Rafiqul Islam Mojnu is among the 10 candidates who filed nomination papers before the deadline, appearing as an alternative BNP nominee for the seat.
BNP sources said the party has kept alternative candidates in the constituency as well, following the same strategy adopted in Bogura-7 and Dinajpur-3.
Returning officers will determine the validity of the nomination papers during scrutiny, after which the list of valid candidates will be finalised in line with election laws and procedures.
