BNP leader shot dead in Jashore
The deceased was identified as Alamgir Hossain, 55, former joint general secretary of BNP’s Jashore municipality Ward-7 unit.
A local leader of the BNP was shot dead in Jashore city on Saturday evening (3 January).
The deceased was identified as Alamgir Hossain, 55, former joint general secretary of BNP's Jashore municipality Ward-7 unit.
The incident took place around 7pm in front of the office of a former councillor in the Shankarpur area.
Confirming the incident, Jashore's Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Faruk Ahmed said, "It is not yet clear who carried out the killing or what the motive was."
According to locals and police sources, Alamgir was in the Shankarpur area on Saturday evening when a group of unidentified assailants opened fire at him and fled. One bullet hit the left side of his head, causing him to collapse on the spot. He was rushed to the emergency department of Jashore General Hospital, where on-duty doctors declared him dead.
Following the incident, Anindya Islam Amit, BNP's acting organisational secretary for Khulna division and the party's candidate for Jashore-3 constituency, visited the hospital.
Speaking to journalists, he alleged that BNP leaders and activists had been systematically killed during the "fascist Awami League regime" and that similar incidents were now taking place under the current government as well, which he described as condemnable and anti-democratic.
He said such violence over political differences is unacceptable and called on the authorities to identify those responsible for the murder, arrest them swiftly, and ensure exemplary punishment.
