The whole area of Bhurungamari upazila in Kurigram district has been declared child marriage free.

Divisional Commissioner KM Tariqul Islam declared the upazila free from child marriage at a post-rally discussion arranged at the Upazila Shilpokola Academy stage in Bhurungamari upazila town on Thursday afternoon.

Bhurungamari upazila administration with assistance of RDRS Bangladesh and Plan International Bangladesh conducted motivational campaign under the Building Better Future for Girls project to turn Bhurungamari into a child marriage free upazila.

Earlier, the divisional commissioner led a huge rally, with participation of 2,000 female and male students with 'No to child marriage' placards in their hands, teachers, officials, public representatives and civil society members, on local streets.

Presided over by Bhurungamari Upazila Executive Officer Magfurul Hasan Abbasi, Kurigram Deputy Commissioner Sultana Pervin, Bhurungamari Upazila Chairman Nurunnabi Chowdhury, ASP Shawkat Ali, Dr. Aminul Islam, General Secretary of District Shilpokola Academy Rasheduzzaman Babu, Kurigram Press Club President Ahsan Habib Nilu and Director (Field Operations) of RDRS Bangladesh Humayun Khaled addressed the function.

Earlier, the divisional commissioner inaugurated the mid-day meal program and lighthouse at Bhurungamari Government Primary School and launched blood group testing camp and distributed 1,200 tree saplings among students of Bhurungamari Pilot High School ground in the upazila town.
