BGMEA seeks Primark’s cooperation to develop a unified code of conduct for audits in factories
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has sought support from global retailer Primark to help formulate a unified code of conduct for social and compliance audits in garment factories.
BGMEA President Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu made the request during a meeting with Primark officials at the association's headquarters in Uttara today (31 July), according to a press release.
"A unified code would simplify audit processes, reduce compliance burdens, and promote an ethical, sustainable apparel industry," said Babu.
Paul Lister, Legal Director of Associated British Foods PLC, Primark's parent company, and Bee Ong, Director of Ethical Trade and Environmental Sustainability, attended the meeting along with other senior officials.
The BGMEA president also urged the brand to increase sourcing from Bangladesh, especially high-value-added and diversified apparel products.
"We requested the brand to strengthen collaboration with local suppliers to foster innovation and enhance product quality," Babu added.
Primark's representatives reaffirmed their commitment to environmentally responsible production in Bangladesh's factories and highlighted the importance of decarbonisation and climate action.
Sustainability featured prominently in the discussion, with both parties exploring ways to promote renewable energy, reduce emissions, and improve worker welfare across the supply chain.
The meeting also underscored the importance of knowledge-sharing to optimise water, electricity, and resource use, lowering production costs while supporting environmental goals.
BGMEA Vice President (Finance) Mijanur Rahman, and directors Faisal Samad and Samiha Azim were also present at the meeting alongside other officials.
