BGB retaliates after BSF firing at Sylhet border, no casualties reported

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) retaliated after India's Border Security Force (BSF) opened fire along the Sylhet border yesterday afternoon (18 May).
However, no casualties were reported, according to a press release issued today (19 May).
Lieutenant Colonel Md Nazmul Haque, commanding officer of Sylhet Battalion (48 BGB), said the BSF opened fire in the Sonarhat border area, which falls under his battalion's jurisdiction.
He added that the BGB responded immediately and returned fire, after which the situation was swiftly brought under control.
The BGB statement said patrols and surveillance in the border area have been intensified following the incident.
It added that the force remains on the highest alert against any provocative or undesirable incidents along the border.
The BGB said it is performing its duties with full professionalism and firmness to protect national sovereignty and border security.
The statement also said that local public representatives and border residents have been cautioned to refrain from illegal border crossings and any unauthorised activities in the border area.
