A Bangladeshi man lost his leg in a landmine explosion near the Myanmar border in Bandarban's Naikhongchhari this morning (8 April).
The incident occurred around 8:30am inside Myanmar territory, near the zero line between border pillar numbers 46 and 47, close to Jarulia Chhari Border Outpost (BOP), said Naikhongchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Masrul Haque.
The injured man has been identified as Md Tayab, 35, son of Chaber Ahsad, from the Kambonia area of Naikhongchhari union.
According to local residents, many people from the area frequently cross into Myanmar to smuggle Bangladeshi goods and return with cattle and other items.
Locals suspect that Taiyab stepped on a landmine planted by the Arakan Army while returning from the other side of the border with goods.
The explosion caused severe injuries to the lower part of his right leg, which was later amputated. He was rescued by locals and taken to Naikhongchhari Sadar Hospital for treatment.
Naikhongchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Muhammad Mazharul Islam Chowdhury said he had been informed of the incident and is looking into the matter.
