Bangladesh and Italy have agreed to strengthen cooperation on migration management, human trafficking prevention, and financial crime control during a bilateral home minister-level meeting held in Rome.
The Bangladesh delegation was led by Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Adviser for the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture, while Italy was represented by its Interior Minister, Matteo Piantedosi, according to a press release.
The meeting, held at the Italian Interior Minister's office on Thursday (16 October), covered a range of issues of mutual interest, including irregular migration, human trafficking, money laundering, and measures to enhance investigation capacity for fire accidents.
Both sides agreed to conduct a joint security dialogue, share intelligence, and carry out joint law enforcement operations to manage migration and prevent trafficking.
They also discussed forming a joint task force to combat human trafficking, rehabilitate victims, and expand opportunities for legal migration.
During the meeting, Bangladesh proposed signing a Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) and an Extradition Treaty to strengthen cooperation in preventing financial crimes. Discussions also included initiatives to build capacity in forensic investigation and asset recovery.
Italy assured Bangladesh of technological assistance and training to improve its investigation capabilities, particularly in responding to fire-related incidents.
