Bangladesh announces candidacy for IMO council re-election
Bangladesh will compete with 26 other nations for one of the 20 available seats in the Category C

Bangladesh has formally announced its candidacy for re-election to Category C of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Council for the 2026–2027 term.
The announcement was made on Monday (7 July) by Mohammad Yousuf, senior secretary of the Ministry of Shipping, during a session at the IMO Headquarters in London.
Bangladesh will compete with 26 other nations for one of the 20 available seats in the category.
Currently serving as a member of the IMO Council for the 2023–2025 term, Bangladesh is seeking continued support from member states to promote its maritime priorities globally.
At the announcement, High Commissioner and Bangladesh's Permanent Representative to the IMO Abida Islam, IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez, and representatives of member states were present.
Reiterating Bangladesh's commitment to sustainable maritime development, Yousuf highlighted the country's strategic location along the Bay of Bengal and its growing role in global shipping, underscored by major infrastructure like Chattogram Port and the under-construction Matarbari Deep Sea Port.
He said both ports are not only crucial for Bangladesh but for the broader South Asia.
On 08 April, Shipping Adviser Brig Gen (Retd) M Sakhawat Hussain presented the candidature at a reception at the IMO Delegates Lounge.
