Babar gets bail in ex-finance minister Kibria murder case
Sylhet’s Speedy Trial Tribunal judge Swapan Kumar Sarkar passed the order

A Sylhet court has granted bail to Lutfozzaman Babar, former state minister for home affairs, in a murder case filed over the killing of former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria.
Sylhet's Speedy Trial Tribunal Judge Swapan Kumar Sarkar passed the order today (12 September), Babar's lawyer Md Shahiduzzaman told The Business Standard.
He said, "Babar sought bail on grounds of illness through his lawyer, and the court granted it after a hearing."
On 27 January 2005, former finance minister Shah AMS Kibria was killed in a grenade attack at a public meeting in Baidyer Bazaar of Habiganj Sadar upazila.
A case was filed against Lutfuzzaman Babar, former Sylhet City mayor Ariful Haque Chowdhury, and several central leaders of BNP in connection with the incident.
Babar was arrested from his Gulshan residence in Dhaka on 28 May 2007.
Other accused including Ariful Haque are out on bail. However, Babar has remained in prison for a long time after being convicted in multiple cases.
Babar emerged as a powerful figure after the BNP-Jamaat coalition government came to power in 2001. As the state minister for home, he garnered significant public and media attention for various reasons, and his name is linked with the 21 August grenade attack and the 10-truck arms haul in 2004, two major controversies from that period.
