Asif Mahmud had previously resigned from his position as adviser to the interim government with the intention of contesting the upcoming national election
Former adviser to the interim government Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain has formally joined the National Citizen Party (NCP) and assumed responsibilities as the party's spokesperson and chief of its Central Election Management Committee.
In a press release today (29 December), the NCP said Asif Mahmud joined the party by filling out the central membership form. He was welcomed with floral greetings by party Convener Nahid Islam, Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwari, and other party leaders and activists.
According to the release, Nasiruddin Patwari voluntarily stepped down from the position of chief of the Central Election Management Committee, which was formed on 4 November.
Following an emergency meeting of the NCP's political council, the party decided to appoint Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuyain, who has newly joined as a central member, as the committee's chief.
He has also been given the additional responsibility of serving as the party's spokesperson.
Earlier in the day, NCP Convener Nahid Islam confirmed at a press conference held at the party's Banglamotor office in the capital that Asif Mahmud would take over as the party's spokesperson in line with a decision of the political council.
Asif Mahmud had previously resigned from his position as adviser to the interim government with the intention of contesting the upcoming national election.
However, the party has confirmed that he will not be participating in the election.
Previously, the former interim government adviser for local government, rural development and cooperatives had collected nomination papers to contest from the Dhaka-10 constituency.
His supporters had also collected nomination papers on his behalf from the Cumilla-3 constituency.
