SC stays HC verdict scrapping appointment of 6,531 assistant teachers

The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today (3 March) stayed a High Court verdict that had scrapped the government's decision to issue appointment letters to 6,531 candidates selected for the post of assistant teachers at government primary schools.
A three-member bench, led by Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam, issued the order after hearing a petition filed by the government.
On 18 February, the apex court had fixed 2 March to hear the petition challenging the High Court verdict, which led to days of protests by the disgruntled candidates.
Earlier, on 7 February, police charged batons and used water cannons on assistant teacher candidates for government primary schools who were protesting against a High Court verdict that cancelled their appointment at government primary schools.
The appointment seekers were recommended for government primary schools in Dhaka (under the third phase of recruitment) and Chattogram (fourth phase) divisions before the appointments were cancelled.
