Angry protesters set ex-CHT minister U Shwe Sing's house on fire in Bandarban
According to witnesses, a group of 20 to 25 youths brought out a procession in the Traffic Mor area around midnight after receiving news of the death of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.
The house of former Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs minister Bir Bahadur U Shwe Sing was set on fire by angry protesters in Bandarban around midnight (19 December), eyewitnesses said.
The incident occurred at his residence in the Rajar Math area of Bandarban town.
According to witnesses, a group of 20 to 25 youths brought out a procession in the Traffic Mor area around midnight after receiving news of the death of Inqilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi.
Chanting slogans, the group later went to the Rajar Math area and set fire to the former minister's residence.
The fire spread quickly throughout the building. Upon receiving the news, the firefighters arrived at the scene, but protesters blocked their entry for about 15 minutes.
Later, the army and police personnel dispersed the protesters from the area.
Firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control by 1:30am. However, by that time, the former minister's residence had been gutted up to the third floor, and three vehicles parked on the ground floor were completely destroyed.
As of filing the report, the army and police were patrolling the area around the residence to keep the situation under control.
