Adviser Mahfuj Alam has been assigned responsibility for the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, a day after Nahid Islam resigned from the post to join an upcoming youth-led political party.
Additionally, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has taken responsibility for the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications and Information Technology, another ministry previously overseen by Nahid.
The Cabinet Division issued a circular in this regard on Wednesday (26 February).
Nahid Islam stepped down from his position as an adviser to these two ministries on Tuesday, handing over the resignation letter to the chief adviser.
Later, officially announcing his resignation at a press briefing at the State Guest House Jamuna, he said, "Given the current situation in the country, the emergence of a new political force is necessary. I have resigned to be on the streets and support the mass uprising. In addition to overseeing two ministries, I had to take on additional responsibilities…Six months is a very short time, and the people will evaluate the results [of my work]."
Nahid, who came to the spotlight during the July-August uprising as a key coordinator of the movement, is set to join the upcoming party of Students Against Discrimination and the Jatiya Nagorik Committee scheduled to be launched on 28 February. He is expected to be the convener of the new party.
