Actor Md Siddiqur Rahman was shown arrested in a murder case filed over the killing of furniture worker Parvez Bepari during the July uprising in the capital's Gulshan area.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Zakir Hossain's court granted police's petition to show Siddiq arrested in the case today (20 August).
Earlier, on 12 August, the investigation officer of the case, Gulshan police Sub-Inspector Md Samiul Islam, filed a petition seeking to show him arrested.
Siddiq was produced before the court today, where a hearing was held on the matter. Following the hearing, the court approved the police plea.
State lawyer Muhammad Shamsuddoha Sumon confirmed the development.
Previously, on 29 April, Siddiq was beaten by a group of youths in the capital's Bailey Road, who branded him an associate of the Awami League, before handing him over to Ramna police.
The next day, a Dhaka court placed him on a 7-day remand in a murder attempt case filed with Gulshan police over the attack on rickshaw-puller Jabbar Ali Howlader. After completion of the remand, Siddiq was sent to jail.
According to the case statement, during the July uprising on 19 July last year, 23-year-old furniture worker Parvez Bepari joined the protest along with friends in front of Subastu Tower under Gulshan police station. He was shot when Siddiq, along with other accused, allegedly opened fire after Friday prayers. Parvez was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Following the incident, the victim's father, Md Sabuj, filed a murder case with Gulshan police.
Actor Siddiq was named as accused no 223 in the charge sheet of the case.
