Acting headmistress made OSD after school employee dies in Cox's Bazar police custody

Rabeya Khanam, the acting headmistress of Chakaria Government High School, has been made an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) following the death of the school's office assistant while in police custody on 22 August.
According to a notification issued today by the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education, signed by Assistant Director SM Ziaul Haider Henry, Rabeya has been attached to the directorate's office in Dhaka.
Durjoy Chowdhury, 27, an office assistant at Chakaria Government High School and a resident of Bhoramuhuri-Hindu Para in Chakaria municipality, was found dead in the lockup of Chakaria police station in the early hours of 22 August.
He had been taken into custody on 21 August following a complaint filed by Rabeya Khanam, accusing him of cheque fraud and embezzling Tk2.83 lakh from the school, said Md Shafiqul Islam, then OC of Chakaria police station.
Police said they found Durjoy's body hanging from a door inside the lockup in the early hours of 22 August.
Durjoy's body was handed over to his family following an autopsy at Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue yesterday, and his cremation took place around 5pm on the day.
In response to widespread protests by local residents over Durjoy's death, OC Shafiqul, along with an ASI and two constables, were withdrawn from Chakaria police station in the past two days.
However, as of today, Durjoy's family has not yet filed a case over the incident.
Chakaria police said no case has been registered because the family has not submitted a written complaint.
Speaking to The Business Standard, Durjoy's father, Kamol Chowdhury, said he intends to file a case by tomorrow.
However, the new OC of Chakaria police station has not yet assumed duty as of today.
