At least eight people sustained serious burn injuries in a fire originating from a gas cylinder blast in Narayanganj early today (3 March).
The accident happened at Dhakeshwari-2 area in the district at 3:30am, confirmed Dr Shawon Bin Rahman, a resident doctor at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery.
"The eight people were brought to the emergency unit of the hospital around 4:45am. Most of them have sustained major burns," said the doctor.
The victims were identified as Shohag, 23, Rupali, 20, Samia, 10, Jannat, 4, Hannan, 50, Sabbir, 12, Sumaiya, one and a half years and Nurjahan, 35.
Contacted, Deputy Assistant Director of Narayanganj Fire Service and Civil Defence Abdullah Al Arefin said, "Upon visiting the spot, we found gas connection through a pipe under the building. The whole house had become a gas chamber due to a leakage in the pipe. We are assuming that the accident happened either when someone lit up the stove or in some other way."
