8 fishermen detained for illegal entry into Sundarbans sanctuary

Eight fishermen were detained by the Forest Department for illegally entering the Notabeki sanctuary area of the Sundarbans in Satkhira range yesterday (1 September).
They were produced before a Satkhira court this afternoon (2 September).
According to the Forest Department, the detainees are residents of the Purba Koikhali area in Shyamnagar upazila.
Assistant Forest Conservator of the Satkhira range, Fazlul Haque, said the fishermen were detained last night when they found fishing inside the restricted sanctuary area.
Around 30 kilogramme of fish of various species were recovered from them.
Fazlul added that while fishing permits were being issued from 1 September, the detainees had entered the forest illegally two days earlier.
Notably, a ban was placed on fishing and tourist entry in the rivers, canals, and forests of the Sundarbans from 1 June to 31 August due to the breeding season for wildlife and fish.
During this time, the movement of boats used by fishermen and workers in various regions of the Sundarbans was also prohibited.
After the three-month ban, the mangrove forest was reopened for visitors and fishers yesterday.
