Trapped tiger rescued from poachers' snare in Sundarbans
The tiger was taken to the Rescue Center of the Forest Department's Wildlife and Nature Conservation Department in Khulna
The Forest Department rescued a Royal Bengal tiger trapped in a trap set by deer poachers in the Sundarbans this afternoon (4 December).
Officials said the tiger was rescued from the trap by injecting it with a 'tranquiliser gun' and rendering it unconscious.
After the rescue, the tiger was taken out of the Sundarbans in a cage at 2:50pm, said Md Mofizur Rahman Chowdhury, fisheries expert and smart data coordinator of the Khulna office of the Forest Department's Wildlife Management and Nature Conservation Department.
The tiger was being given saline as it had become quite weak. Due to the crowd of enthusiastic people, the Forest Department staff quickly left for Khulna with the tiger.
Divisional Forest Officer of the Sundarbans East Forest Department Md Rezaul Karim said the tiger is being taken to the Rescue Center of the Forest Department's Wildlife and Nature Conservation Department in Khulna.
The next decision will be taken after the treatment there, he added.
A local fisherman first spotted the tiger inside the trap around noon on Saturday (3 January), about half a kilometre away from human habitation in the Sundarbans East Division and informed forest officials.
Upon receiving the information, members of the Forest Department rushed to the spot and cordoned off the area. Later, an expert team including a veterinary surgeon came from Dhaka to rescue it.
Officials of the Wildlife and Nature Conservation Department also came from Khulna to help with the rescue.
