Seven people, including six madrasah students, were burned after being electrocuted while trying to retrieve clothes that had fallen from the roof onto an electrical wire in Brahmanbaria.
The incident took place yesterday (29 October) afternoon at Darun Najat Women's Madrasa in the Bhaduar area of the district town.
Six of the injured have been sent to Dhaka for advanced treatment, confirmed Dr Ratan Kumar Dhali, the superintendent of Brahmanbaria General Hospital, adding that although none of the victims were in critical condition, they were sent to Dhaka for advanced care.
The injured are madrasa students Nusrat, 10, Sadia Khatun, 6, Rowza Akhter, 12, Nusrat, 11, Jannatul Mawa, 8, Umme Taisan, 5, and the madrasa's attendant Aleya, 22.
According to madrasa sources, some students' clothes had fallen onto an electric wire from the fourth-floor roof. The attendant, Aleya, tried to retrieve the clothes through a window using a long steel pipe. As soon as the pipe touched the clothes, it also came in contact with the live electric wire, and Aleya was electrocuted. Sparks and flames from the wire spread inside the room, burning six students nearby.
The injured were rescued and taken to Brahmanbaria General Hospital, from where six were later referred to Dhaka for better treatment.
