The thefts occurred on the night of 8 January between 12:30am and 6am at four temples located in Chowdhuryhat Bonikpara under Hathazari police station, the release said.

The affected temples were Prabhu Jagadbandhu Ashram, Satya Narayan Seba Ashram, Bishweshwari Kali Temple, and the Sub-Deputy Bari Puja Mandir, it added.

Following the incident, a complaint was filed by Sriman Kanti Ghosh, prompting Hathazari Police to launch an investigation.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Hathazari Circle) Kazi Mohammad Tarek Aziz told The Business Standard that through witness statements and analysis of CCTV footage from the surrounding areas, they were able to identify and arrest seven suspects

"Yesterday, one of the arrested, Harun Mia, confessed his involvement under Section 164 in court."

Despite the confessions, police have not yet recovered any stolen items. One of the arrestees claimed during his confession that the donation boxes at the temples contained no more than Tk1,000-Tk1,500, the ASP said.

"Certain groups tried to misrepresent the incident, but swift action by Hathazari police uncovered the truth behind the thefts. Efforts are ongoing to apprehend other individuals connected to the case," he added.
