6 injured as two groups clash over local dominance in Cumilla
The incident took place at Saudia Para Station intersection in Korbanpur village under Bangra Bazar Police Station of Purbadhair East Union, police said.
At least six people, including a union parishad member and local leaders of Jubo Dal and Swechhasebak Dal, were injured in attacks, counter-attacks and vandalism between two groups over establishing dominance in Cumilla's Muradnagar on Saturday (3 October).
The incident took place at Saudia Para Station intersection in Korbanpur village under Bangra Bazar Police Station of Purbadhair East Union, police said.
The injured are Omar Ali, 70, a member of Ward 3 of the union parishad; Md Ziaur Rahman, 35, convener of the union Swechhasebak Dal; Rezaul Karim, 37, joint convener of the union Jubo Dal; Amir Hossain, 38, son of Sona Mia; Al Amin, 48, son of Danu Mia; and Rubel, 28, son of Shah Jahan.
According to locals, residents of Wards 1 and 3 of Korbanpur village have been in a longstanding dispute over establishing local dominance.
On Friday night, Ziaur Rahman and Rezaul Karim were assaulted by residents of Ward 3 while returning home from Bangra Bazar Police Station.
Following the incident, supporters of Ziaur and Rezaul allegedly attacked the Soudiapara Station intersection on Saturday morning with locally made weapons. The clash later escalated into counter-attacks and vandalism.
Several houses and shops were also allegedly attacked and looted during the clash.
AKM Kamruzzaman, additional superintendent of police of Muradnagar Circle, said the situation is currently under control.
"No one has submitted a written complaint so far. Legal action will be taken if a complaint is filed," he added.
