5 Myanmar army, BGP members detained at Ghumdhum border
They were picked up around noon from Gachhbunia Para under Ward-9 of Ghumdhum union, near Border Pillar 42
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) today (23 November) detained five members of Myanmar's security forces, four from the Border Guard Police (BGP) and one from the army, along the Ghumdhum border in Bandarban's Naikhongchhari upazila, according to police.
They were picked up around noon from Gachhbunia Para under Ward-9 of Ghumdhum union, near Border Pillar 42.
The detainees are: Ko Ko Sine, 35, second inspector of the BGP, from Momek town in Myanmar's Shan State; Soe Thura, 38, BGP member from Pan Tanaw town in Ayeyarwady region; Aung San Htu, 25, BGP member from Magatutaw town in Ayeyarwady region; Kyaw Zayer Lin, 32, BGP member from Ayeyarwady region; Min Min Oo, 41, a member of Myanmar's junta army from Yangon region.
Naikhongchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Masrurul Haque said, "We have been informed about the detention of Myanmar army and BGP personnel. However, they have not yet been handed over to the police station."
"Legal action would be taken once the detainees are handed over to the police," OC Masrurul Haque added.
Locals told journalists that this noon, the five Myanmar security members sought shelter from villagers at Gachhbunia Para, located about 1.5 kilometres inside Bangladesh from Border Pillar 42 under the jurisdiction of the 34 BGB's Mongjoypara BOP. A patrol team from the BOP later detained them and took them into custody.
Repeated attempts to contact Lieutenant Colonel SM Khairul Alam, commanding officer of Cox's Bazar 34 BGB, were unsuccessful as he did not answer his phone.
Naikhongchhari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Mazharul Islam Chowdhury confirmed the incident, saying he heard that the detainees had been taken into BGB custody.
