49 unpleasant incidents during Durga Puja, 19 arrested: IGP

A total of 49 unpleasant incidents, including vandalism of idols, occurred across the country during the ongoing Durga Puja, said Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam.
So far, 19 individuals have been arrested in connection with 15 cases, he added while speaking at a press briefing at the police headquarters today (30 September).

The IGP said this year Durga puja is being celebrated in 31,606 mandaps accross the country amid a peaceful atmosphere. However, 49 incidents, including vandalised idols, hurling water and asking to stop puja, occurred and 19 people have been arrested.
Earlier on 28 September, Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today (28 September) warned that tougher action will be taken against those spreading rumours or inciting communal unrest on social media centring Durga Puja.
The adviser made the warning while briefing reporters after a meeting of the Core Committee on Law and Order at the Secretariat.
To ensure security, Ansar members have been deployed since 24 September and will remain on duty until 2 October, he said, adding that nearly one lakh security personnel, including Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) platoons have been deployed for the Puja security.
