25 killed in mob violence in August: Report
Violence against journalists doubled compared to previous months, says the HRSS report
At least 25 people were killed in 38 separate mob lynching incidents across the country in August, according to the latest report from the Human Rights Support Society (HRSS).
The report highlights that the rise in mob violence has been linked to various reasons including suspicions of theft.
The report warns that without immediate intervention, the overall human rights situation could further deteriorate.
According to the report, at least 67 incidents of political violence were recorded, resulting in four deaths and 514 injuries. Most of these incidents arose from BNP factional clashes, though confrontations involving the Awami League, Jamaat, and other parties were also reported. Additional fatalities occurred due to attacks on political activists.
It stated that violence against journalists doubled compared to previous months, with 39 incidents affecting 72 reporters.
Along the India-Bangladesh border, 11 attacks by the BSF resulted in four deaths, eight injuries, and 427 people being pushed back. On the Myanmar border, civilians faced grave risks from landmines and arrests by the Arakan Army, said the report
The month also saw 159 cases of violence against women and girls, including 64 rapes and 18 gang rapes. A total of 133 children were abused, 17 of them fatally. Workplace accidents caused the deaths of at least 21 workers due to unsafe conditions.
The HRSS urged the government, civil society, and political stakeholders to uphold the rule of law, restore democratic practices, and protect citizens' constitutional rights.
