2 Rohingyas killed in Teknaf ‘gunfight’

Two Rohingya men died in what was described as a gun battle with the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) members in the coastal upazila of Teknaf early today.

The deceased are Abul Hasim, 25, of Ukhiya Kutupalong Rohingya camp, and Nur Kamal, 19, of the same camp.

Police recovered 50,000 pieces of yaba pills from the scene.

Teknaf-2 Battalion BGB Commander Lt Col Faisal Hasan Khan said, "Hoyaikkong union BGB members were on patrol by the Naf river at midnight when some men entered the Bangladeshi maritime border by boat. When two men came down from the boat, the BGB members tried to question them, but they ran.

"Suddenly, they started shooting at the BGB members. Those who were on the boat started firing as well. The BGB members then fired back in self-defence."

Hasim and Kamal sustained injuries in the gunfight and were taken to Teknaf Upazila Hospital where doctors declared them dead.

Lt Col Faisal said the two were identified as Rohingya men from the cards found in their pockets.

Three BGB members were also injured in the incident and are under treatment at Teknaf Health Complex.

The BGB commander said a locally-made LG gun, two rounds of bullets, two machetes and 50,000 pieces of yaba tablets were found on the scene.

"The bodies of Hasim and Kamal were sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital for autopsy. Also, a case is being filed in this regard," he added.
