Two people were killed and three others injured after a bus crashed into a rickshaw van at the Monirampur Degree College intersection on the Jashore-Chuknagar road this afternoon (6 July).

One of the deceased was a pedestrian, while the other was a passenger on the van, police said.

Confirming the matter, Monirampur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Babulur Rahman Khan said, "Immediately after the accident, locals, fire service personnel, and police jointly rescued the injured and admitted them to the Monirampur Upazila Health Complex. The bus has been seized and its driver has been detained. Legal procedures are underway."

The deceased have been identified as Raton, 27, son of Rajon from Abdullah Para in Gaibandha's Saghata upazila, who was a passenger of the van, and Nazmul Dafadar 40, a pedestrian and son of Abu Khalek Dafadar from Jaypur village under Jashore's Monirampur upazila.

According to police sources, the accident took place around 1:00pm when a bus heading towards Jashore from Monirampur struck a van coming from the opposite direction near the Monirampur Government College area.

After hitting the van, the bus also ran over a pedestrian about 30 metres away.

Raton died on the spot, while locals rushed the injured to the Upazila Health Complex, where Nazmul died during treatment.

Following the incident, angry locals stopped the bus and handed over the driver, identified as Abdul Goni, 35, to police.
