2 Bangladeshi teens injured by gunfire from Myanmar
BGB patrols along the border have been intensified
Two Bangladeshi teenagers were injured by shots allegedly fired from Myanmar along the Teknaf border in Cox's Bazar today (27 January).
The incident occurred around 8:30am near the Naf River between Jimongkhali and Kanjar Para in Hnila union of Teknaf upazila, according to Whykong Police Outpost in-charge Inspector Khokon Chandra Rudra.
The injured were identified as Md Sohel, 16, son of Sheikh Kamal, and Md Abdullah, 17, son of Md Yunus, both residents of Kanjar Para in Hnila union.
Quoting locals, Inspector Rudra said the two teenagers had gone fishing near the border area when members of Myanmar's Arakan Army opened fire at them, leaving both wounded.
"They sustained bullet injuries to the head, hands and legs. However, based on the nature of the injuries, it appears the gunfire was not from heavy weapons," he added.
The injured were initially rescued and taken to the MSF hospital in Kutupalong, Ukhiya for treatment.
Md Ismail, maternal uncle of Sohel, claimed that the duo had gone to collect firewood in the Jimongkhali area of Hnila when multiple bullets fired from Myanmar hit them.
"One was shot in the leg and chest, the other in the chest. As their condition was critical, they were referred to Chattogram," he said.
Lieutenant Colonel Md Jahirul Islam, commanding officer of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Battalion-64, said "The two were injured near the Myanmar border. We are collecting detailed information, and BGB patrols along the border have been intensified."
Earlier, on 11 January, a Bangladeshi child named Huzaifa Afnan was injured by gunfire allegedly fired from Myanmar in the Whykong border area.
The following day, a fisherman named Abu Hanif lost a leg in a landmine explosion near the same border.
On 13 January, another child, Sumaiya Huzaifa, 11, was critically injured by gunfire allegedly fired by the Arakan Army near the Techchhi Bridge border area of Whykong union and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Dhaka.
