A total of 175 Bangladeshi migrants were repatriated this morning (21 August).
A chartered Buraq Air flight carrying the returnees landed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 6:15am, according to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The repatriation was jointly coordinated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, and the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Officials from the foreign ministry, relevant agencies, and IOM welcomed the returnees at the airport.
According to the release, the returnees had been staying in Libya without legal status. Most had entered the country with the assistance of human traffickers, intending to reach Europe via dangerous sea routes. Many were reportedly subjected to abduction and torture during their stay.
The finance ministry urged the returnees to share their harrowing experiences with others to raise awareness and prevent similar incidents.
The IOM provided each returnee with travel allowances, food supplies, primary medical care, and temporary accommodation where necessary.
Meanwhile, the foreign ministry, the Bangladesh Embassy in Libya, the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment, and the IOM continue to work together to ensure the safe repatriation of Bangladeshis held in various detention centres across Libya, the release added.
