16 killed, 599 injured in 103 incidents of 'political violence' in November: HRSS

At least 16 people were killed and at least 599 injured in at least 103 incidents of "political violence" in November, according to a report published by Human Rights Support Society (HRSS).

"A review of the human rights situation in November 2024 shows that political violence focused on expanding dominance, killings in mob lynchings, political cases and arrests, attacks on journalists, killings of workers, deaths in prison, attacks on minority communities, torture and killings of innocent Bangladeshis at the border, and violence against women and children continue," the organisation said in a statement today (3 December).

"Of the 103 incidents of violence, 51 occurred in BNP internal conflicts, 23 between BNP and Awami League, four between BNP and Jamaat, two in Awami League internal conflicts, three in anti-discrimination student conflicts, and 20 incidents occurred between different parties," the HRSS said in its report.

"In addition, at least 225 people were injured in at least 12 incidents of protests, vandalism and clashes in various colleges and universities in the country.

"At least 46 journalists were tortured and harassed in at least 27 incidents this month. At least 17 people were injured in these incidents, nine were humiliated, three were threatened and five were arrested. In addition, 13 journalists have been charged in three cases," according to the report.

"At least four attacks on minority communities this month have included one temple attack and three idols vandalism."

The HRSS also reported that at least 21 incidents of mob lynching have resulted in 12 deaths and 15 injuries in November.

The report further states, "In November, 26 people were killed and at least 23 were injured in 36 incidents of worker torture. Ten workers died in accidents at their workplaces due to unsanitary conditions and lack of protective equipment for workers."

"In November, at least 110 women and girls were victims of torture. Of these, 32 were raped, of whom 17 (53%) were children under the age of 18. It is a matter of great concern that seven women and girls were gang-raped and three were killed after rape. Twenty-four women and girls were sexually assaulted, including 12 children," according to the report.
