152 cops promoted to additional DIG, 177 to SP

The government has promoted 152 superintendents of police (SP) to the post of additional deputy inspector general (additional DIG), and 177 additional SP to the rank of SP.

These promotions were announced through four different home ministry notifications, three signed by the ministry's Senior Assistant Secretary Md Mahabur Rahman Sheikh, on Monday and Tuesday.

Police headquarters (PHQ) sources said that another seven additional deputy inspector generals are going to be promoted to the rank of DIG within a few working days after the final nod of the superior selection board (SSB) recommendation.
The government has created 52 more supernumerary positions to the Bangladesh Police's organisational structure, according to a notification released by the Ministry of Public Administration on 17 September. Of the posts created, two will be for additional inspector generals (additional IG) and 50 for DIG.
Earlier, on 7 September, the government approved promotions for 290 top police officials by creating such temporary "supernumerary posts". According to the Ministry of Public Administration circular, 140 posts were allotted for additional DIGs and 150 for SPs.
The decision was made in response to a request from the PHQ to create these "supernumerary posts" to promote around 529 top police personnel. The remaining officials would be promoted gradually.
Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal explained that these posts were created under "special arrangements" to address the pending promotion issue in the police administration.
According to the PHQ database, 150 officers of the 28th BCS cadre batch have been waiting to be promoted to SPs from additional SPs. Thirty-five officials from the 29th BCS, who joined the force in 2011, are also awaiting this elevation.
But only 77 SP posts will be vacant by 2030 as officers from the ranks of SP to additional IG are scheduled to go into pre-retirement (PRL) leave by that time. In the seven years, 233 officers, including 81 additional DIGs, 57 DIGs, and 18 additional IGs, will go into PRL.
