One killed and five others were injured as a car skidded off the Chattogram Elevated Expressway in Nimtala Bishwa Road area today (20 November).
The deceased has been identified as Md Shafiq, 43, a resident of Fakirhat area. Police said he was riding a bicycle below the expressway when the accident occurred.
The identities of the injured have not yet been confirmed.
Confirming the matter to The Business Standard, Bandar Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Masud said, "The car skidded off the expressway and fell on a road around 4:45pm, leaving Shafiq dead on the spot and five others injured."
Shafiq's body has been taken to Chattogram Maa O Shishu Hospital, while the injured passengers are receiving treatment at the city's Islami Bank Hospital. Authorities are preparing to transfer them to hospitals in Dhaka.
According to Chattogram Development Authority (CDA) sources, the maximum speed limit on the expressway is 60 km/h, and it is 40 km/h on curved sections. Conversations with drivers revealed that speed limits are often ignored, and vehicles accelerate rapidly on empty stretches. Despite restrictions, motorcycles are also using the expressway.
In August last year, during trial runs, two motorcyclists lost their lives. Earlier this month, two private cars overturned on this route.
