Workers of requisitioned vehicles block Agargaon road over food allowance
The protesters said they are being paid Tk250 per day as food allowance for election duty, which they claimed is insufficient to cover even a proper meal
Workers of vehicles requisitioned for election duty blocked road in capital's Agargaon for an hour this afternoon (10 February), demanding an increase in their food allowance.
The protest began around 3:15pm when drivers and helpers gathered in front of the China Friendship Conference Center, bringing traffic on the Khamarbari–Mirpur road to a halt.
The protesters said they are being paid Tk250 per day as food allowance for election duty, which they claimed is insufficient to cover even a proper meal.
They said the road blockade was organised to press for an increase in the allowance.
The workers withdrew the blockade around 4:15pm after law enforcement agencies assured them that the issue would be raised with the relevant authorities.
The road was cleared following intervention by the army.
Confirming the incident, DMP Tejgaon zone Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Md Fazlul Karim said the workers had blocked the road demanding a higher food allowance.
"After being assured of talks with the authorities, they left the road," he said.
