US, EU envoys meet Jamaat Ameer, discusses polls and state reform
Issues related to trade and commerce, as well as the Rohingya crisis, were also discussed
Newly appointed US Ambassador to Bangladesh Brent Christensen, the European Union Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller paid separate courtesy calls on Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman at the party's Basundhara office in Dhaka today (29 January), where they discussed issues related to the upcoming national election and state reform.
During the discussion with the US ambassador, the two sides exchanged views on Bangladesh's prevailing political and economic situation, with particular emphasis on the next national election and the need for state reforms. Issues related to trade and commerce, as well as the Rohingya crisis, were also discussed.
Ambassador Christensen praised Jamaat's positive role in Bangladesh's economic development and democratic progress. Both sides expressed optimism that bilateral relations between Bangladesh and the United States would be further strengthened in the coming days.
From the US Embassy in Dhaka, Political and Economic Counsellor Eric Gillman, Public Affairs Officer Monica L Tsai, Political Officer James Stewart, and Political Specialist Firoz Ahmed were present.
Jamaat-e-Islami representatives at the meeting included Assistant Secretary General and Central Publicity and Media Department Chief Ahsanul Mahboob Zubair, Central Executive Council member Md Mobarak Hossain, and the Jamaat Ameer's foreign affairs adviser Mahmudul Hasan.
Meanwhile, European Union Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller paid a courtesy call on Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman at his office in Bashundhara today (29 January).
He was accompanied by Sebastian Rieger Brown, political first secretary at the EU delegation in Dhaka.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed a range of issues of mutual interest between Bangladesh and the European Union, with particular emphasis on the upcoming national parliamentary election and the strengthening of democratic processes in the country.
They also expressed optimism about the continuation of bilateral relations, development cooperation, and progress in the coming years.
Also present at the meeting were Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General and head of the Central Publicity and Media Department Ehsanul Mahbub Jubayer, and the Ameer's adviser on foreign affairs Mahmudul Hasan Chowdhury.
