Swechchhasebak Dal leader detained with Tk50 lakh in Patuakhali
He was apprehended from a residential area in front of Khepupara Girls’ Secondary School polling centre in Kalapara municipal town, where he was found carrying a bag filled with cash.
A local leader of BNP-affiliated Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal was detained by the Coast Guard with Tk5 lakh in cash in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali district on Wednesday night (11 February), reports Prothom Alo.
The detainee, Rezaul Karim, also known as Kajol Mridha, is the joint convener of the Kalapara municipal unit of the Swechchhasebak Dal, said Kalapara Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Robiul Islam.
According to the OC, Rezaul Karim was apprehended from a residential area in front of Khepupara Girls' Secondary School polling centre in Kalapara municipal town, where he was found carrying a bag filled with cash.
Responding to the incident, Kalapara municipal BNP General Secretary Musa Tawhid Nannu Munshi said Rezaul is a prominent sand trader in the town. He claimed the detention and the seized money have no connection with the national parliamentary election or BNP's organisational activities.
OC Robiul said the detained individual has not yet been formally handed over to the police station.
