Polling agents among six injured in Chattogram clash
The situation is now normal, and additional police have been deployed, police said
At least six people, including two polling agents, were injured in a clash between supporters of two candidates in Anwara upazila of Chattogram today (12 February).
The incident took place around noon outside Guapanchak High School polling centre in Boirag union under the Chattogram-13 (Anwara-Karnaphuli) constituency.
Officer-in-Charge of Anwara Police Station Md Junayet Chowdhury said the situation was now normal and additional police had been deployed.
According to local sources, voting had been peaceful in the morning, but tensions rose outside the centre later in the day.
Supporters of the Bangladesh Islami Front-nominated candidate alleged that a group of 30-40 supporters of the BNP-backed candidate attacked their followers, triggering a chase and counter-chase that escalated into a clash.
The injured, including polling agents Md Rubel and Asiful Islam, were admitted to Anwara Upazila Health Complex.
Others injured were Shahdat Hujur, 45, Muntasir, 22, Ekram, 25, and Arif, 31.
Ekram alleged that outsiders attacked him, asking why he was there, and injured his leg.
However, local BNP leader Lokman Shah said the clash resulted from a misunderstanding with supporters of Jamaat and the Greater Sunni Alliance candidate while trying to resist Awami League activists.
Police reached the spot and brought the situation under control.
Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Assistant Returning Officer Tahmina Akter said BGB, police and executive magistrates were on duty to ensure voter security.
