After voting concluded in the 13th national election, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus today (12 February) called upon political parties and candidates to ensure that democratic civility, tolerance and mutual respect remain intact after the final results are declared.
"Differences of opinion will exist, but in the national interest we must remain united," he added in a statement issued after the conclusion of voting.
He extended heartfelt congratulations and gratitude to the nation as the 13th National Parliamentary Election and the referendum on the implementation of the July National Charter were completed in a peaceful, orderly and festive atmosphere.
His statement said the spontaneous participation of voters, the responsible conduct of political parties, the restraint shown by candidates and the professionalism of all institutions involved in the election have collectively demonstrated that the nation's commitment to democracy remains firm.
Through exercising their constitutional rights, the people have played an active role in determining the country's future, he added.
"I extend special thanks to the Election Commission, law enforcement agencies, the armed forces, the administration, observer teams, media personnel and all officials and employees involved in the voting process. It is due to their dedication and hard work that this vast democratic exercise has been completed successfully," he said.
He further stated that Bangladesh has once again proven that the people are the ultimate source of power. "We will move forward collectively towards building an accountable, inclusive and justice-based state," he said.
Describing the election as a moment of great joy and celebration for the nation, he said it marked the beginning of an unprecedented journey towards a new Bangladesh.
He added that this election was the most peaceful and festive in the country's history. "If this continuity can be maintained, our democracy will reach the pinnacle of excellence. Let us work together in this journey to strengthen democracy," he concluded.
