Personal freedom being interfered, says NCP's Asif on detention of Jamaat leaders with cash
He also accused the Election Commission and law enforcement agencies of bias ahead of the polls
The National Citizen Party (NCP) today (11 February) alleged that the detention of Jamaat leaders with cash reflects interference in personal freedom.
"We are seeing how personal freedoms are being interfered with under the pretext of confiscating money. A Jamaat supporter has been detained over just Tk20,000, and others even for carrying laptops. These actions are being staged as a show," NCP spokesperson and Chair of its Election Management Committee Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan said while speaking to journalists at the party's Banglamotor office in Dhaka.
He added, "Through collusion, a group is attempting to frame our alliance members, and defamatory reports are being spread in the media. Such tactics must be stopped to prevent this staged intimidation."
Asif emphasised that law enforcement should arrest candidates who attempt to buy votes directly through cash transactions, but also stressed that people carrying legitimate funds must not be detained.
He also accused the Election Commission and law enforcement agencies of bias ahead of the polls.
"We see clear signs of bias across the Election Commission, returning officers and law enforcement agencies nationwide. Media bias is also evident," Asif Mahmud said.
Meanwhile, NCP Election Management Committee secretary Monira Sharmin expressed concern over the polling-day environment, accusing some media outlets of attempting to spread misinformation.
She urged the Election Commission to ensure voter safety and a fair electoral atmosphere.
